SKILLS AND MULTITASKING

Ability to work on a team, good people skills, and the ability to multitask are ubiquitous job requirements. Literal-minded Aspergians may disqualify themselves from jobs that would be a good match. “I know my people skills aren’t good,” they say.

I explain that these are not absolute terms, and can mean very different things depending on an industry, the type of job and even a particular company. People skills are much more important for a retail sales associate than for a computer programmer. The amount of multitasking required of someone working in my town library, which serves 6000 residents, will be significantly less than for a person who works at the Boston Public Library.

Do not assume that an individual will make these connections. Help him to imagine what a work setting will be like and the type of interactions or level of multitasking there will be.
